Running Bamboo

Spread by sending out roots, or rhizomes, into the earth to a depth of about one-foot.

Natural controls of bamboo.

Water

Running bamboo does not like water and will not grow beyond the edge of a pond or stream.

Light

Runners will not migrate into deep shade.

New Shoot Removal

When bamboos ‘shoot’ in spring, break off any unwanted culms.
phyllostachys aureosulcata aureocaulis
Culms are entirely yellow except for an occasional vertical green stripe. Extremely hardy and vigorous grower. Resembles tropical species.

phyllostachys aureosulcata spectabilis

The culms are bright yellow with a green groove. White stripes can occasionally occur on the willow-shaped leaves. Canes sometimes have a ‘kink’ near the base. Spectacular garden plant for cold climates.

phyllostachys bissetti

A vigorous growing bamboo with densely packed culms. Good for making hedges. Culms are a rich green with a spatial branching habit. Extremely hardy in colder climates.

phyllostachys nigra

Black bamboo. Culms turn jet black after the first 6 months to one year. Popular because of it’s graceful habit and the sharp accent of its color.

phyllostachys nuda

Culms are olive-green with powdery – white rings beneath each node. A tall, upright bamboo for tough conditions.
